Is There a Sunny Day in Seattle or is it All Rain?

Hi.  My name is Nicole and I’m 12 and in the 6th grade, almost 7th.  I live in Seattle , Washington .  I have three sister, Hidie, who is ten and in 4th grade, Zoe who is 8 and in 2nd grade and last, Amanda who is 6 and in kindergarten.  Here in Seattle it never stops raining.  I HATE RAIN.  Sorry, it is getting to me.

“Hidie, where did Amanda go?”

“I don’t know.  You’re the babysitter.  Ha Ha. Get it?  Sit on baby. Ha Ha Ha”

“No.”

Since it is June 4th, we want to go to the beach and go swimming, so we hope it will stop raining.

One day when I was in third grade, I remember going to the lake and it was a nice sunny day.  The lake was crisp and you could hear the lake go back and forth.  It was so pretty.  I went swimming and it was so warm.

“Zoe, have you seen Amanda?”

“Yeah, we were playing hide-and-seek.”

“So, where is she?”

“In the closet.”

“Nicky can you help me with my homework?”

“No.  Mom will help you.”

Our dad is a famous writer and is always on the road.  I can’t wait for him to come home.

Next Morning

“Hidie, I told you, you can not go to Veronica’s house.”

“Why?”

“Because it’s almost Zoe’s birthday and we have a surprise.”

“Fine.”

“The bus is here.  Come on Nicky, Hidie, Zoe and Amanda,”  yelled mom.

“Can you get on the bus, Amanda?”, I said.

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because today is the last day of school and that means the last day of kindergarten.”

“Come on kids, figure this out,” said the bus driver.  “There’s a lot more stops.”

“Amanda, next year it will be fun.”

“Fine, but I’m still not happy.  Sorry, bus driver,” she said.

“Amanda!” yelled Hidie.  “I have a softball game and you put my shoes in the dirt and buried them”

“Did not.”

“Did too.”

“Did not.”

“Mom!”, both of them yelled.

“She put my shoes in the dirt.”

“I DID NOT!”

“Then who did?”

“Nicky.”

“What?”

“Did you?”

“No.  I saw Amanda do it with my own eyes.”

“You are a liar!”

Mom came to each of our rooms and said goodnight.  Mom went down the steps and sat down.  The phone rang.  Mom started crying.  An hour later, mom came to me and told me and Hidie to go to Zoe and Amanda’s room.  We did as she said.

She said our dad had died in a plane crash.  We all cried our hearts out.  Our dad died on June 6.  Zoe had not come out of her room for four weeks.  Our mom is looking for a job with more pay and our grandma stays with us now.

“Zoe, can you come out of your room?” said Hidie.

No answer.

“Just leave her alone,” I told her.

“Girls, supper,” said Grandma.  “Don’t you want to eat?”

“No.  Gosh, Hidie, just leave me alone,”  Zoe screamed.

“Fine!” screamed Hidie.  “I hate having three sisters!”

I said, “You know Hidie, hate is a powerful word.”

“What’s all the screaming for?” asked Mom.

“You know how Zoe has been mad about dad?  Well, Hidie has been trying to get her out of her room.”

“You know, kids.  It takes some time to get over that,” Mom said.

“Yes, we know.”

“Kids,” said Mom.  “Let’s gather in Zoe and Amanda’s room.  I have a surprise planned.  We are going to take a road trip!”

2 hours later Mom asked, “Are you all packed up?”

We left in our Toyota Highlander with everything in it.  I knew this was going to be a horrible car trip.  Hidie and Zoe were fighting the whole way.

When we got there we put up camp.  We were sitting around when Mom yelled,

“Stop the fighting and look for the good in each other!”

Zoe and Hidie looked at each other and apologized.  Then we were talking and laughing about how funny Dad was.  Mom said when Hidie and I were little, we put Dad’s tie down the drain.  He was so mad at us until Hidie said something funny and we all fell down laughing and dad tripped on the toilet.

When we got home, everything was good.  We got a dog named Buddy and I’m in 7th grade (finally!), Hidie is in 5th, Zoe is in 3rd, and Amanda is in 1st grade.  We are happy.  And it stopped raining, thank you Lord.

Well, that’s my story; but I have one last thing to say.

Life is good; life is oh so good.
