First Catch

Grade 10
Roseau
Below the dark dirty
surface,
Lies today's big
surprise.
The fish swims
carefree,
Not knowing of the
struggle soon to come.
I whisper to the
water,
In hopes of coxing my big first
catch.
First the fish
nibbles,
As if to kiss the
lure.
As quick as lightning,
The fish takes the
bait.
A streak of light as
it comes,
Closer, and closer to
the surface.
The rush, the
excitement,
So eager to reel it
in.
But, I stay patient as
I watch
The river flow as I
tire the fish.
At the end of a small
string,
Is a gigantic
Northern.
My rod bends, ready to
break,
I pull the fish
ashore.
And I tremble with excitement.
My first fish.
