The Furry Surprise

“Are we there yet?”  My brother moaned to Mom.

“Not yet.”  Mom was acting a little mysterious—how she said that.

We were half way to the place we were going.  Mom wanted it to be surprise, but all I could think about was our dead cat Sasha.  I ran my finger down the mark that my brother made with a pencil.  He said he wanted to write my name on the seat to let everyone know that the seat was mine.  Then it fell quiet.  I bet they were all thinking about Sasha too.

I heard the car motor.  That was the only thing I could hear—the car’s motor.  It sounded like a stampeded of elephants running with us.  Then all at once everybody started talking and I knew at that moment we were there.

“Are we going to a work party?”  I asked, hoping they would say yes.

“Nope.  You’ll see,” Dad said in the same voice mom had used earlier.  Then I had another idea, but when we entered the house my mind drew a blank.  There was nobody there except two women.

Mom told us to go into a closet.  I thought mom was a little crazy, but me and my brother went to the closet.  As we opened the door, I had an idea.

As soon as we opened the door, I said, “we’re getting a new kitty!”  Right then the door went swinging open and not one, not two, not even three, but eleven Kitties came rushing out of the door.

“Kitties,” my brother shouted.  Everybody, even mom and dad, came rushing to see all the kittens.  When I knelt down to pet one, another kitty collapsed on my foot between my legs and purred.  And right then I knew this was the one for me.  Then I rushed to mom and pleaded her.  Mom had never had a boy cat before, but after a few minutes of pleading she finally agreed.   Kristian also picked a boy as well.

Then we happily got ready to go.  When dad started the car, the ride back was quiet.  Then I heard a sound so familiar.  It was the motor of the car, but it didn’t sound like just like a motor.  My cat laid on my lap.  It was his purr.  The sound made me smile.

It was the best car ride ever.

When we brought them to our house, or their new home, they started bounding all over.  They started to get used to their new names.

That night, we had a big party with our cousins.  They were really surprised that we got new kitties.  Then Samy disappeared.  We found him curled up in a ball in the corner under the dresser after the party was over.

After our cousins left, I saw our kitties snuggling together.  I asked Mom if I could take their first family picture.  “Sure.  I guess so.”  She shrugged, so I did.  Then as I turned around, I swore I heard them say,

        “Goodnight Karl.”
